Farewell 2016, we’ll miss you!

20 December 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, we’re thinking back on the good times we’ve had — our achievements, the friends we’ve made, and the new adventures carrying us into next year.

It was fantastic working with an incredible bunch of Australian and international clients over the last 12 months, and a lovely surprise to have nabbed awards for a few of those projects that went live in the first half of the year. Since then, we launched a spate of new commercial, campaign and ecommerce sites, along with a number of apps, for awesome clients across a range of industries.

An even bigger surprise was getting a Webby nomination for last year’s Break Up with IE8 project — looks like we’re not the only ones who fell out of love!

The Perth Device Lab opened its doors to the local creative digital community. Right now, it’s home to 19 devices and 4 plants and has hosted a pantheon of visitors, including Andy Clarke, Lotterywest and Central TAFE.

Waaffle social media display at Mixin 2016

We launched Waaffle, a content aggregation platform for all sorts of social media fun, like running competitions, adding live displays at events, following popular hashtags across different channels — and other stuff too.

We also launched Flower Bros, a super simple online flower-buying experience. Since launch we’ve sent hundreds of bunches of amazing flowers to customers in Perth and recently started delivering in Sydney. Next year will be even bigger with further expansion and some other surprising things in store.

Back in April, we released Modaal, an accessible modal (popup/pop-over) plugin, and later shared our website launch checklist with fellow web creatives.

Humaans speak at events around Perth

A few of our team were lured out of their caves to speak at A11y Bytes Perth, Fenders, AGDA and Morning Startup events.

As attendees, we found Mixin a dream! Mad props to our very own Kylie and the rest of the Mixin crew for organising a top-notch event (and after-party).

We adopted a new humaan, Sandy, as well as a talented crew of interns, Dana, Charlotte, Alyssa, Chris, Alvin and Ash. The Design Kids paid us a #TDKtuesdays visit, and we squished a whole Fenders meetup into our conference room.

Visitors were treated to the brand spanking new murals in our foyer, by visual geniuses Matthew Wong and Chris Nixon.

New Humaan hobbies from the past year

Finally, we picked up a few new hobbies this year. We’re pretty excited to see what they’ll become in 2017.

Wherever you are, however you celebrate, here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

– Jay, Karen, Lee, Paul, Mark, Dedy, Kylie, Chris, Jesse, Dan M, Jess, Dan B and Sandy.

Are popups still a good idea?

Go on. Ask any internet user how they feel about popups. You may learn some new swear words. And yet, when the business case for UX is stronger than ever, many brands still default to popups...

Dear Developer. Love, Designer.

Last month, a tweet by Yesenia Perez-Cruz, Senior Designer at Vox Media, caught my eye. Her tweet asked what seemed like a simple question:   I see an abundance of articles about how designers can make developers lives...
